Career Coaching vs. Career Transition Coaching - There is a difference!

A career coach offers advice and guidance to individuals who are currently employed and are looking to advance their careers or position within a company.

Career transition (CT) coaches work with individuals who have recently been laid off or those that are seeking different employment. Organizations provide Career Transition Coaches to ensure a smooth transition, minimize the chance of litigation and other negative actions, help maintain the morale of remaining employees, to preserve the company’s reputation as a good corporate citizen, to reduce the stress-level of managers involved in layoffs, to set the course for the company’s change management strategy and to genuinely "do the right thing".

  1. Have you ever done CT coaching? What were the outcomes?
  2. How did you feel interacting with folks who have recently lost their job?
  3. How do you feel handling the various emotions that accompany this type of coaching?
  4. What resources do you use when doing CT coaching?
  5. Why everyone should take advantage of career transition- discuss the major benefits. Lots of candidates don’t understand the value behind it.
  6. Traditional Career Transition programs vs. customized ways you have helped people.
  7. What ground work needs to be done to help the individual move forward. Assessments, CAR statements, timeline exercise, etc.
  8. What do you do when they aren’t getting interviews? Landing the job? In other words, how will you know where they need help in their search?
