Association of Talent Development - Greater Cincinnati Chapter

Volunteer Spotlight
VP of Membership, Arlene Baker

This month, we feature Arlene Baker, GCATD VP of Membership. In 2018, Arlene served as Conference Chair for the GCATD Fall Conference, EPIC Innovations.

Arlene's worked in the payroll field for over 40 years with 20 of those years in a training position. She's become involved with GCATD in the last few years, starting with a volunteer position on the GCATD conference committee.

Her advice to anyone interested in volunteering for GCATD? "Do not hesitate, just do it! Volunteering allows you to grow and be of service to a great organization. It provides opportunities to meet others that have the same interest as you that normally you would not meet. It allows you to shine and make a difference personally and professionally." MORE

Here is a preview of some of the highlights:

  • Conference Keynote Presented by Kevin Eikenberry >
  • Concurrent Sessions both morning and afternoon, featuring a variety of topics ranging from the latest technology trends to real-life company success stories. Emphasis will be on sharing practical how-tos.

  • A Sponsor Showcase featuring 20-30 minute presentations by several of our conference sponsors highlighting overviews of their product and service offerings for those who are in the market and interested in connecting with potential resource partners.

Talent Development News Worth Knowing

GCATD members Rochelle Thompson and Gina Ruffin-Moore graciously offered to share their experiences at the 2018 ATD International Conference and their “brushes with fame” with GCATD. They noted that the 2018 ATD International Conference was outstanding.

Pictured left to right: Gina Ruffiin-Moore, Marcus Buckingham, and Rochelle Thompson.

Rochelle and Gina heard from and met Marcus Buckingham (pictured left), a keynote speaker, and maneuvered through a crowd of about 11,000 to obtain front row seats to hear former President Barack Obama speak on the opening day of the conference. They also sat with Tony Bingham, President of ATD, during the press conference. They were lucky to be invited to attend all of the press conferences of each keynote speaker and with the ATD board! (Rochelle shares that none of this was planned prior to attending the conference and says that to tell that story would take another article).

There were many learning tracks to choose, vendor booths to visit, numerous networking opportunities to meet people from various parts of the world, and the chance to hear A-listed key note speakers. It was an undertaking that Rochelle says she will never forget. MORE

May 8 Corporate Panel - Recap of 'Creating a Learning Culture in the Corporate World'

Pictured left to right: Paaras Parker (84.51), Vicki Dalzelle (Phillips Edison & Company), Mary Tettenhorst, moderator, GCATD President Elect, Chris Eversole, GCATD VP of Professional Development, and Matthew Thomas (Messer Construction Co.).

Imagine work cultures where there are no yearly employee evaluations, employees take responsibility for their professional growth and development, and storytelling is a priority for management and employee engagement.

2019 GCATD President elect, Mary Tettenhorst, moderated, as panel members: Vicki Dalzelle (Phillips Edison & Company), Paaras Parker (84.51) and Matthew Thomas (Messer Construction Co.) provided their company’s perspectives and practices on learning and development on May 8, 2018 at Messer Construction Company.

Even the concept of, “training and development,” is changing along with the HR role. As one panel member pointed out, past business practices involved viewing the HR role as punitive. Employees were “trained” to do better when their behaviors jeopardized employment. MORE
