We were talking a little bit about this in the OD SIG a few weeks ago. I realized a lot of what I know about the business and the relationships I built started from the time I was in the client services role. I’m curious how those who start directly in talent development or HR roles work to build that business knowledge so they can show the business value of their work.
When I can, I like to work with cross-functional teams especially when it comes to developing skills in areas I’m not as familiar with. I can help show value by making sure the right people have the right information at the right time. When we have an open position and no one applies because they don’t feel prepared I feel like that’s a missed opportunity to provide value. By understanding the company strategies, following industry news, and sitting in key company meetings I try to keep on top of business needs and trends so I can link my actions with business needs.
